WISC-IV Overview

What is the WISC®-IV?

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children® 4th Edition (WISC-IV) is an individually administered Intelligence test for children ages 6-16. Scores from this test are often used as a tool for measuring a student’s ability to enter into a gifted program but can also be used as a clinical tool to diagnose learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Test Format

The WISC-IV exam is made up of 10 core and 5 supplemental subsets which are divided into four index areas: Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory and Processing Speed. The test is usually administered by a psychologist on an individual (one-on-one) basis and takes approximately 65-80 minutes to complete.

Each subtest that is given will have a raw score, which is the number of “points” received on the subtest. When your child takes the actual exam, the examiner uses the raw scores and age-based norm tables to come up with a scaled score for each subtest. The addition of scaled scores is what is used to come up with the index scores and IQ score.

How to Prepare

The best way to prepare for the WISC-IV exam is by exposing your child to the exam format and the types of questions they will see on the day of the exam. With Mercer Publishing’s full-length Practice test, your child will experience the same format and number of questions as the actual exam. Each practice test booklet contains 1 full-length exam and comes with the answers and explanations. The downloadable versions of our test is available for Mac and PC users.
